The Florida Architecture Archives at the University of Florida: The FAA was established in 2003 as a joint initiative between the School of Architecture and the Smathers Library's Special Collections. Both partners invested consistently to advance the Collection in its initial establishment.
The FAA acquires, preserves, collects and provides access to the documents of the architecture developed in Florida and the Caribbean. The Archive aims at providing primary source materials for scholarly research, teaching support, preservation and public service and is committed to raise awareness of the significant contribution of Architecture and Landscape Architecture to the shaping of Florida's built environment.
It provides a scholarly resource of preserved perishable documents of the architecture of Florida through drawings, plans, specifications, photographs, audio and videotapes, personal papers, records, art and models of architects, landscape architects, architectural firms, planners and associated professions. The Collection supports instruction through its undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels, and is open for research, with the objective of advancing disciplinary and transdisciplinary research. It documents the work and merit accomplishments of UF alumni.
The inaugural donation was done by Alfred Browning Parker in the late 1990's. After its establishment, the collections of Rufus Nims, Darryl Fleeger, and Kenneth Treister were acquired, as well as the Carrere and 1880 Hastings Flagler Building on a long time loan by Flagler College. The library houses the thesis works of numerous Historic Preservation students documenting the historical buildings in Florida.
It is expected that the University Facilities will transfer its original documents to the collection. The FAA will organize traveling exhibits, promote lectures and scholarly research. This will open the opportunity of naming the FAA. as well as the Florida Modem Architectural section and we are developing prospects.
