ASSISTANT DIRECTOR SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE–CITYLAB-ORLANDO

A new position of Assistant Director School of Architecture has been established in support of the Citylab- an interdisciplinary research and design center focused on design-based responses that advance urban quality and sustainability in the post-war American City. Established in 2007, the mission of Citylab is to:

  • Establish an interdisciplinary laboratory, as part of a Master of Architecture degree program to study and propose design-based responses that advance urban quality and sustainability in the post-war American City.
  • Engage the Orlando community in design workshops, charrettes, lectures and exhibitions focused on architecture, urban design and the future of the American city.
  • Provide continuing education opportunities for design professionals.
  • Engage new media, integrated design modeling technologies and emerging visualization tools that support community-based design decisions.

The new Assistant Director will refine and advance the Citylab-Orlando mission; work within the established curriculum of the School of Architecture, specifically the Master of Architecture Degree Program; promote service learning projects; develop internship linkages with practice and continuing education; develop connections with the other units in the College in order to promote interdisciplinary relationships and future potentials; and expand the Graduate School of Architecture (G|SoA) cohort in Orlando. Citylab-Orlando will operate under the oversight of the School of Architecture and the College of Design Construction and Planning of the University of Florida.

The new Assistant Director will have a diverse range of responsibilities both academic and administrative with the primary activities as follows:

  • Collaborate with the existing SoA administration and faculty to launch the Satellite MArch program in Orlando.
  • Teach at least two design studio courses per year as part of the academic assignment within the School of Architecture.
  • Establish linkages with municipal agencies, local design professionals and nurture our existing collaboration with the University of Central Florida and Valencia College.
  • Seek out grants and conduct engaging projects that provide service to the community and scholarly rigor for students in the Master of Architecture Degree program. When feasible, seek participation with other units in the College in order to provide interdisciplinary relationships and holistic solutions to projects.
  • Assist with fund raising in collaboration with DCP development officers for projects and general operations.
  • Publicize the work of Citylab-Orlando in the local community; publish and present the work of the program in scholarly journals and conferences.
  • Oversee general operations, and supervise the support staff in Citylab-Orlando.

The new Assistant Director should have experience in the academy and professional practice. The position requires a Masters degree or PhD degree in one of the design disciplines–Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture or Urban Design. The Assistant Director must be interested in and capable of conducting graduate design studios in the School of Architecture and a research agenda that explores issues of the contemporary city and emerging urbanism.

The position will be tenure-track or a tenured appointment within the University of Florida, School of Architecture. The salary will be commensurate with the scholarly and administrative duties outlined above and the qualifications of the candidate. This will be a 9 month academic appointment, with a 3 month administrative appointment and a complete benefits package. The Assistant Director will collaborate with faculty from the University of Florida College of Design Construction and Planning departments (Architecture, Building Construction, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning), and adjunct faculty from the Orlando area, and as enrollment increases, new faculty will be hired (targeted for 2013).

Facilities
The existing Citylab-Orlando facility includes a design studio, administrative space, meeting spaces and shared event spaces within the new University of Central Florida Emerging Media Center located in downtown Orlando. It is anticipated that the facility will expand at the existing location as enrollment increases.
